As new opportunities sprout up to increase the density of residents in the downtown grid, it’s important that we preserve the many single family homes which have defined the character of our Central City. I live in a house that was moved and restored in 1978. That took foresight and is a great example of how we can protect our history while building our future. To that end, I have asked staff to create a public list of open lots in the Central City suitable to move these homes to, so that developers can find places for these resources without having to tear them down. My hope is that we can improve our neighborhoods and preserve important housing through this new tool.
Too often, sustainable mixed-use housing projects are being delayed because we want to save these single family homes but do not know where to relocate them. This inventory of lots will give developers a vetted set of options – a tool we can use to preserve our past while building for our future.
